Accountability and self-motivation are objectives for our elementary students. Students at
this level are curious and eager to learn about the world around them. The teachers are
preparing the students to tackle more varied and rigorous activities. They work independently
to complete research and creative writing. The academic program leads them to be more involved
in the Amarillo Montessori Academy community and to take greater roles and more responsibility
within the classroom.
In the mixed-age classroom, younger children are inspired watching
older children at work; those who are capable of understanding more complicated concepts can
join more advanced lessons. In Montessori philosophy, the arts, sciences, geography, history,
math and language are not always broken down into separate subjects, but are treated as a total
integrated curriculum. Knowledge is presented as part of a large-scale narrative that unfolds
through the origins of the earth, of life, of human communities, of empires, and of modern history,
always in the context of the wholeness of life.
